Lovro Majer could not have written the script much better. In the 86th minute he was summoned from the bench. By full-time he had a FIFA World Cup™
goal and a 4-1 victory for his team – one that propelled Croatia to the top of Group F – to celebrate.
The 24-year-old nevertheless insisted that scoring on the biggest stage of all was not on his mind when he stepped on to the Khalifa International Stadium turf. “No,
I wasn’t desperate to score,” he told FIFA+. “I just wanted to play my game, help the team keep hold of the result.
If there’s a chance to score a goal, of course [it’s great].”
And it is. As Majer walked back into the dressing room, it began sinking in that he had scored in a competition that made him fall inIvan Perisic added:
“Everyone knows that they’re a really good team, top players.
Kevin, I played with him in Wolfsburg. For me, with Luka Modric, maybe [they are]
the two best midfielders in this moment. “It’s going to be tough. We need one point but we have to play for victory because we don’t know how to play any other way.
If you play for the draw, I think it is going to be difficult for us. We have to play our game and I think it’s going to be successful.

“I started playing football because of the tournament, because of games like this. The first thing was coming here and playing the game.
Now, scoring the goal, it cannot be better.” The result left Croatia requiring a draw with Belgium to reach the last 16. And that will mean stopping no less a talent than Kevin De Bruyne.
““He’s their best player, their most important player,” said Majer.
“For me, personally, he’s also one of the best players in the world. I love his style, how he plays, what he does for the national team, for his club. Definitely, for me, he’s their best player.”
